Growth and Decay

In seeking now a reasonably solid grasp on the value of the word, organic, we should at the beginning fix in mind the values of the correlated words, organism, structure, function, growth, development, form. All of these words imply the initiating pressure of a living force and a resultant structure or mechanism whereby such invisible force is made manifest and operative. The pressure, we call Function: the resultant, Form. Hence the law of function and form discernible throughout nature.

[…] The architecture we seek shall be as a man active, alert, supple, strong, sane. A generative man. A man having five senses all awake; eyes that fully see, ears that are attuned to every sound; a man living in his present, knowing and feeling the vibrancy of that ever-moving moment, with heart to draw it in and mind to put it out: that incessant, that portentous birth, that fertile moment which we call Today!

As a man who knows his day, who loves his day, who knows and loves the exercise of life, who rightly values strength and kindliness, whose feet are on the earth, whose brain is keyed to the ceaseless song of his kind: who sees the past with kindly eye, who sees the future in a kindling vision: as a man who will to create: So shall our art be. Fort to live, wholly to live, is the manifest consummation of existence.

Kindergarten Chats- Crescita e decadenza

Cercando ora un appiglio ragionevolmente solido per valutare la parola organico, dovremmo, per cominciare, fissarci nella mente i valori delle corrispettive parole, organismo, struttura, funzione, crescita, sviluppo, forma. Tutte queste parole implicano la pressione iniziale di una forza vitale ed una risultante struttura o meccanismo mediante il quale tale forza invisibile è resa manifesta ed operante. La pressione, noi la chiamiamo Funzione: la risultante, Forma. Da qui la legge di funzione e forma discernibile in ogni parte della natura.

[…] L’architettura che noi cerchiamo sarà un uomo attivo, agile svelto, forte, sano. Un uomo capace di generare. Un uomo con i cinque sensi ben desti; occhi che vedono pienamente, orecchie all’unisono con ogni suono; un uomo che viva nel suo presente, che conosca e senta la vibrazione di quel momento, sempre in moto, con un cuore in cui imprimerlo ed una mente per esprimerlo: quell’incessante, quel portentoso inizio, quel fertile momento che chiamiamo Oggi!

Come un uomo che conosce il suo giorno, che lo ama, che conosce ed ama l’esercizio della vita, che valuta giustamente la forza e la gentilezza, i cui piedi sono sulla terra, il cui cervello è in accordo con la incessante canzone della sua razza: che guarda al passato con occhio benevolo, che vede il futuro in una visione di bontà: come un uomo che vuole creare: così sarà la nostra arte. Perché vivere, vivere pienamente, è il manifesto compimento dell’esistenza.
